Questions we get every week
Answered the way we'd answer at the counter. If yours isn't here, call 0416 692 292 — real mechanic, real answer.
The workshop
Where is Switch Gear Automotive located?
196 Riverstone Parade, Riverstone NSW 2765 — on the main strip through Riverstone, minutes from Rouse Hill, Schofields, Box Hill and Marsden Park. Call 0416 692 292 if you need directions.
Do I need to book, or can I just come in?
Most services book online through this site — pick a service and a drop-off slot that suits. Pink slips and puncture repairs also welcome as walk-ins. Blue slips and engine diagnostics are phone bookings on 0416 692 292, because timing depends on the vehicle's condition.
How much will my repair cost?
We diagnose first, then quote — you approve the number before we start work. If we find something the quote didn't cover, we stop and call you. No invoice surprises is a house rule.
Do you provide a warranty on your work?
Yes — workmanship is warrantied, and parts carry their manufacturer's warranty. Confirm current warranty terms with us when we quote; we'll put them in writing on the invoice.
Can you service my new car without voiding the warranty?
Yes. Under the Australian Consumer Law, independent logbook servicing with correct parts and fluids keeps your new-car warranty intact. See our logbook servicing page for how we document everything.
What payment methods do you accept?
EFTPOS, card and cash. For larger jobs, ask us about arrangements when you approve the quote.
How do I leave a review?
We read every one. Ask at the counter for the quickest way to leave a Google review, or search "Switch Gear Automotive" in Google Maps and scroll to reviews. If something went wrong, call us first — we'd rather fix it than read about it.
Pink slips
Do I need a pink slip for my rego renewal?
In NSW, most light vehicles older than five years need an eSafety check (pink slip) before renewing registration. Vehicles five years old or newer generally don't. If in doubt, your Service NSW renewal notice states exactly what's required.
What's the difference between a pink slip and a blue slip?
A pink slip is the routine safety inspection for rego renewal. A blue slip is a fuller identity and safety inspection needed when a vehicle is unregistered, has been written off, is transferring from interstate, or has lapsed registration by more than three months.
How long does a pink slip take?
It depends on the condition of the vehicle — the slot time is when we take the car in, not a promise of how long the job takes. Older cars especially can need extra checking once they're up on the hoist. The certificate is lodged electronically with Service NSW the same day the car passes.
Do I need to book a pink slip?
Walk-ins are welcome, but a quick call to 0416 692 292 gets you a time slot so you're not waiting behind booked-in services.
Blue slips
When do I need a blue slip instead of a pink slip?
You need a blue slip if the vehicle is unregistered, its registration has lapsed by more than three months, it's being transferred from interstate, it has been cleared from a repairable write-off record, or it's being registered in NSW for the first time. Routine rego renewals only need a pink slip.
How long does a blue slip take?
It depends entirely on the vehicle's condition. A well-kept car is quicker; an older or long-unregistered vehicle can need significant extra vetting before it passes. The slot we book on the phone is when we take the car in — not a fixed finishing time. The certificate is lodged electronically with Transport for NSW the same day it passes.
What does the inspector check in a blue slip?
Everything a pink slip covers — brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, wipers, structural components — plus a full identity check of the VIN, engine number and chassis against the vehicle's records.
Do I need to book a blue slip?
Yes — call 0416 692 292 and we'll book you in and talk through what to expect for your vehicle. Blue slips are phone bookings only, because timing depends so much on the car's condition and history.
Logbook servicing
Will a dealer refuse warranty work if you serviced my car?
They can't, as long as the logbook schedule was followed and correct parts and fluids were used. We keep full records of every service so you have proof if a dealer ever questions it.
How often does my car need a logbook service?
It depends on the manufacturer — commonly every 12 months or 10,000–15,000 km, whichever comes first. Your logbook lists the exact schedule; we follow it, not a guess.
Can you service cars still under a capped-price service plan?
Yes — but check your plan terms first. Capped-price plans are usually a dealer prepayment, so it may be cheaper to use it up. We're happy to quote against it either way.
Brakes & clutch
How do I know my brake pads need replacing?
Common signs: a high-pitched squeal when braking (the wear indicator), grinding (metal on metal — stop driving it), a longer pedal travel, or the car pulling to one side. We measure pad thickness and show you the numbers when the car is in.
Do rotors always need replacing with pads?
No. Rotors have a minimum thickness stamped on them — if yours are above it and undamaged, they can often be machined; if they're at or near the limit, replacing them with pads is the safe call. We measure and show you, every time.
How long do brakes last in Sydney's west?
Stop-start suburban driving eats pads faster than highway km — anywhere from 30,000 to 70,000 km. Brake life depends on the car, the pads and the right foot; we'll tell you honestly what's left at each service.
Engine diagnostics
Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
A steady light: get it checked soon. A flashing light means an active misfire that can destroy the catalytic converter — drive gently straight to a workshop, don't wait.
Can't you just clear the code?
We can, but if the fault is real it comes back in days. The scan is the cheap part; knowing which of the five possible causes behind a code is the one on YOUR car is what you're paying for.
Do you diagnose intermittent problems?
Yes — they're the hard ones. We combine scan data with testing on the car, and if the fault won't show itself, we'll tell you what conditions to capture rather than replacing parts on a guess.
Suspension & steering
Why are my tyres wearing on the edges?
Often it's worn steering or suspension parts — things we inspect and fix in-house. We diagnose the exact cause before you buy tyres that would wear the same way.
Tyres
When do tyres legally need replacing?
At 1.5 mm tread depth anywhere on the tyre in NSW — but wet-weather braking drops off well before that. We flag tyres at around 3 mm so you can plan instead of being stranded.
Can my puncture be repaired?
If the puncture is in the central tread band and under 6 mm, and the sidewall and liner are sound — yes, with a plug-and-patch combo. Sidewall damage or a shredded liner means the tyre is done; we won't "repair" what the standard says isn't repairable.
How much are new tyres?
Tyres are priced by size and brand, so we quote before fitting — call 0416 692 292 with your rego or tyre size (printed on the sidewall) and we'll give you options at a few price points.
Batteries
My car won't start — is it definitely the battery?
Often, but not always — a failing starter or alternator mimics a dead battery. That's why we test the whole starting circuit, not just swap the battery and hope.
Do you dispose of the old battery?
Yes — old batteries are recycled through proper channels, included in the fitting price.
General repairs
Do you do pre-purchase inspections?
Yes — a used-car inspection before you buy is the cheapest insurance in motoring. We check the car end to end and give you a written verdict you can negotiate with.
Do you service fleet or rideshare vehicles?
We do — with priority turnaround so the car stays earning. Call 0416 692 292 to set up an arrangement for your vehicle or fleet.
